Gearing up for South Africa

Looks like corporation wants me to go to a war zone this time. I've never done this before and I am a little shaky on what to bring on my ventures, but I think I have compiled an efficient list of items for my travels. Physical and mental health are taken into consideration as well as my safety when creating this list as well as communication all around; including within the tribes and back to America.

Before stumbling into these native tribe I must do some extensive research on the tribes culture. Learning about their beliefs and rituals is key in order to understand them. I do not want to insult them in any way, because that could be potentially harmful my survivability. Knowing why they attacked another tribe would be useful knowledge as well, since I will be able to begin to understand the tribe's reasons for attacking.

The List:

A Gun-
One cannot be too safe in a war zone, so I have decided to bring a pistol in case of an emergency. In the best case scenario I wont need it.

Bullet Proof Vest-
Again, for my own safety.

Crummy Clothes-
These clothes will be of low quality since it could get messy in Africa, plus the natives might frown upon luxurious clothing.

A Photo-
Just a mental boost from a picture of my loved ones. It might not be much, but it will keep me sane for the few days that I am in Africa.

iPhone-
I am not too sure if a cell phone can connect to the internet in Africa (may cost a premium), but I will use email and twitter to help capture my story efficiently.

A translator-
Even though their are many many languages spoken in Africa, a hand-held translator will be useful since it will be programmed to speak widely accepted languages in Africa in order to pay for the services of a human translator that o the is native to the area.

Once Arriving

I believe my first story will accumulate as I obtain interviews from a large amount of the tribes people. My story will focus on the beliefs and interpretations that the tribe has on war and other subjects.

The Grave is Found

I would not panic or begin to get a biased opinion on the tribes people. I would write a story about it only displaying the facts that were allotted to me with no interpretations of my own. Although I may believe the killings were unnecessary, I wont write about that.

The Veterans Come Marching In

The Westboro Baptist church has been described as a group of radical far right wing protesters bent on the harassment and bantering of peoples beliefs and morals.

They can be found at soldiers funerals holding up signs with phrases such as "God's kills soldiers as punishment" or "Thank God For 9/11".

Soldiers aren't the only target the Westboro church ridicules; Jews, Catholics, homosexuals, and many others have fallen victim to their irrational beliefs.

Their church consists of a little over 100 members with 80% of the members being blood related.

An interview of a leader from the Westboro Baptist Church was interviewed on Fox News. The members of the Fox team could hardly hold their opinions to themselves.

Across America their mark has been made, but recently at Oxford, Ohio also known as The University of Miami's campus, they protested in front of the student body.

On October 5th at 4:15 p.m. is when they came. Six determined motorcyclists each carrying the American flag proudly and wearing rough leather jackets complimented by their gruff facial hair
On October 2drove into Oxford, Ohio.

"At first glance I believed they were part of the notorious motor cycle gang Hell's Angels because they are "pro" veterans, but after further analyzing them, they appeared to be ex-marines who call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders." stated Chris Frey, a freshman who attended the protest.

As the marines made their way to the protesting square where the Westboro church members were standing, the massive crowd began to part immediately out of respect.

The Veteran's goal is to blot out the distraction of the Westboro members through the use of their motorcycles loud engines and their flags. The American flags engulf the Westboro members making them out of sight and the engines drown out any noise they may attempt to make.

Covering Dr. Hodge's Speech

As a great public speaker, Dr. Hodge inspires a crowd, a new generation at Miami. He brought up big topics such as; the recession, environmental changes, and ethnic diversity and exemplifies what a Miami mind should perceive these as. Dr. Hodge states that we should embrace change enthusiastically and confidently in order to develop. Specifically, Hodge wants new students to learn about the variety of culture Miami offers in order to further ourselves. Understanding other's cultures, according t Hodge, is an essential part of being successful in this world.

Success was a major idea in Hodge's speech. Four qualities he wants all student to practice are innovation, thriving on big problems, execution, and place culture ahead of structure. He claimed that entrepreneurship is not only to those majoring in it or those who took up business, but half of the students who became entrepreneurs were other majors altogether. Clearly success comes in many different flavors.

After Hodge talked, a talented man by the name of Max Jansen, sang an opera piece to the crowd. His performance seemed flawless since every note was hit perfectly. After Jansen completed finished his last note, the crowd gave him a warming applaud. "I honestly hate opera and really never listen to it, but this kid was really good", exclaimed Jordan Fogt, a freshman attendee who recently listened to Jansen's performance.

Hodge made it clear during his speech, anybody can achieve greatness regardless of their field of study as long as they apply the right ingredients to the recipe of success.

So What's the Hype About Politico.com?

To put it bluntly, Politico.com seems to be a conservative website focused on covering as much news as possible regarding politics and everything that falls underneath that category. This can include any political races, and scandals within the government, or even just wrap ups of the latest speech. The site seems to like to ask the reader their opinion on the situation, but skews the perception to the right. Some examples of some titles include 'Chris Christie wise not to run?', 'Whispers on Hill: Romney or Perry?', and 'Did Obama try to save Troy Davis?'. Though they set it up for the reader to make up their own mind, there is a subtle vibe of conservatism within the articles.

Again, the conservative point of view can be found in various places across Politico.com as they reference Fox News frequently. Most of the articles that are found within the sites boundaries involve a mistake or a misconception of a Democratic candidate or position holder. The site may claim to not have an opinion, but using phrases such as 'Obama bristles' or 'Obama's testy BET interview' point towards negative connotations of the Democratic party and Obama in general.

Videos are all over the site along with pictures where videos are not. There is an entire section dedicated to political videos, which is considered the new way of receiving technology. Watching videos for the readers is a way for them to receive information from the politicians themselves. Some examples of these videos are found here http://www.politico.com/multimedia/.

In general, the site is a good source of information, but reader beware, the information is opinionated and questionably reliable. Take caution before believeing everything that the site releases.

Fox versus Huffington Biased/Unbiased Regarding Obama's 'Decline'

Of course it is biased!
Fox News is well known for their right wing views of political controversy. Though the information is clearly targeting the decline as Obama as a president and the future of him as a potential candidate for the next election, it brings up some interesting points which should be addressed.

According to the survey, 54 percent think the president is unlikely to recover from his setbacks.

This survey was conducted by NBC News/Wall Street Journal.

The same poll showed Obama's overall approval at 44 percent, and his approval on the economy at 37 percent. Worse, only 19 percent think the country is going in the right direction. It's the lowest rating yet for a president who galvanized an historic coalition of supporters on a message of hope for America.

-Foxnews.com

Based off these statistics, Obama is clearly on the decline in American's hearts and most hope has been eliminated from people's mindsets as Obama promised more than he could deliver.

An interesting thought I'd like to point out is that Foxnews.com is using statistics from other sites almost as if they aren't being biased, but don't be fooled. It is clever, but not overlooked by many readers that Foxnews.com chooses only bad statistics about Obama to bring an impression to their articles that Obama is failing extremely hard in all aspects.

Based off the Huffington Post's article regarding Obama, they both completely agree that Obama's future doesn't have much 'Hope' to back it up. Like Foxnews.com, The Huffington Post uses other sources statistics and graphs to back up their story without a Biased interpretation from the readers. One can assume that if positive polls came out about Obama that the Huffington Post would share this information while Fox News would hide it or distort it for the readers of their respects sites.

and

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/06/obama-polls-congress-all-time-lows_n_950521.html?1315329758

As you can see by the titles; Confidence in Obama Slipping to New Lows as Campaign Season Ramps Up (Foxnews.com) and Obama Polls Congress All Time Lows (Thehuffingtonpost.com). Indubitably, it is clear the their is a negative connotation from Foxnews.com's perspective and a rather unbiased perception of the event from Thehuffingtonpost.com's perspective. Fox uses words such as confidence and slipping, while Huffington just spits the facts.

Both Posts share the same information, but the wording and perception both posts share are skewed differently. Hopefully for Obama's sake he can find a way out of this predicament or it is now looking too good for him.
