The Veterans Come Marching In

The Westboro Baptist church has been described as a group of radical far right wing protesters bent on the harassment and bantering of peoples beliefs and morals.

They can be found at soldiers funerals holding up signs with phrases such as "God's kills soldiers as punishment" or "Thank God For 9/11".

Soldiers aren't the only target the Westboro church ridicules; Jews, Catholics, homosexuals, and many others have fallen victim to their irrational beliefs.

Their church consists of a little over 100 members with 80% of the members being blood related.

An interview of a leader from the Westboro Baptist Church was interviewed on Fox News. The members of the Fox team could hardly hold their opinions to themselves.

Across America their mark has been made, but recently at Oxford, Ohio also known as The University of Miami's campus, they protested in front of the student body.

On October 5th at 4:15 p.m. is when they came. Six determined motorcyclists each carrying the American flag proudly and wearing rough leather jackets complimented by their gruff facial hair
On October 2drove into Oxford, Ohio.

"At first glance I believed they were part of the notorious motor cycle gang Hell's Angels because they are "pro" veterans, but after further analyzing them, they appeared to be ex-marines who call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders." stated Chris Frey, a freshman who attended the protest.

As the marines made their way to the protesting square where the Westboro church members were standing, the massive crowd began to part immediately out of respect.

The Veteran's goal is to blot out the distraction of the Westboro members through the use of their motorcycles loud engines and their flags. The American flags engulf the Westboro members making them out of sight and the engines drown out any noise they may attempt to make.

  1. Adam,

Good background material on Westboro Baptist Church - what was your source? Need to attribute information. I like the way you linked to Fox News coverage, in case readers want a different perspective.

Your article organization needs some work here, though. News articles generally start out with the freshest angle - in this case, WBC protesting at Miami, why and what happened. (Recall the handout I gave you in advance of this event giving guidance on writing news articles.) And I'd definitely work on the spot where you said "On October 5th at 4:15 p.m. is when they came. Six determined motorcyclists..."

Organizing your sentences like that makes it seem as if the Patriot Riders are WBC members.

I am very confused by your reference to University of Miami...?

Lastly, you need some context in here on WHY the WBC came to Miami U, and what the university planned in response (the Unite Miami gathering and pledge).
